Chapter 5 – Barriers That can Hinder Learners’ Sense of Belonging

Obstacles to learning and engagement can manifest at multiple levels, encompassing attitudinal, organisational, and contextual factors. For this reason, it is important that educational professionals are cognizant of these barriers, possess the ability to discern their origins, and are capable of proposing and implementing solutions that foster inclusive learning experiences for all learners.

However, challenges such as bullying, disciplinary practices like isolation, and feelings of loneliness can diminish learners’ sense of belonging and negatively affect their mental health and self-esteem. A sense of belonging in school is a basic requirement to fully experience and optimise school life.
