Chapter 3 – Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is the disciplined process of analysing, evaluating, and synthesising information to guide beliefs or actions. By encouraging reasoned analysis and reflective thinking, educators can create a space where students feel valued and empowered to share their ideas.
Developing effective questioning skills is vital too.
Open-ended questions stimulate curiosity and require learners to apply, analyse, or evaluate information. Such questions prompt critical thinking and help learners explore different perspectives and reach their own conclusions.
Additionally, it’s important to avoid judging or excluding any ideas in the classroom. Non-judgmental communication focuses on evidence and maintains objectivity. When communication is based on facts instead of emotions or assumptions, it fosters critical thinking and creates a safe space for VET learners to express themselves. It helps build trust and encourage open engagement, ultimately enhancing learners’ critical thinking and communication abilities.
