Chapter 2 – Why do Learners Need to Feel a Sense of Belonging?
A sense of belonging is vital for enhancing learners’ mental health by reducing feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. When students feel connected to their school and classroom, they are more motivated to engage in their learning, participate in discussions, and pursue academic goals with greater determination (Panorama Education).
This sense of belonging also fosters meaningful relationships between learners and their peers, as well as their teachers, nurturing essential social skills and emotional intelligence. Students who feel part of a community tend to maintain consistent school attendance, knowing they are supported.
Ultimately, cultivating a sense of belonging creates an inclusive atmosphere where learners can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, paving the way for personal achievement throughout their educational journey.
