Chapter 1 – What is Mental Health?

Mental health is a multifaceted concept that encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It significantly influences how individuals think, feel, and behave, affecting their ability to handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mental health is defined as “a state of well-being in which an individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community” (WHO, 2024).

Key Components of Mental Health are:

  • Emotional Well-Being (happiness, interest in life, and satisfaction);
  • Psychological Well-Being (self-acceptance, personal growth, purpose in life, and autonomy);
  • Social Well-Being (social integration, contribution to society, and the belief that society is improving).
