Chapter 1 – General Learner Support as a Precondition for Inclusive Learner Engagement

General learner support lays the groundwork for inclusive engagement by providing institution-wide systems and policies that promote accessibility and reduce the pressure on individual teachers. This approach ensures that all learners have equitable opportunities to participate in engagement activities.

Different Forms of Learner Engagement and Support

Learner engagement encompasses a diverse range of activities beyond coursework. (This has been elaborated further in Module 3. “Understanding Learner Engagement in VET”).  Each form requires tailored support to meet its unique objectives and enhance the experiences of participants. Below are examples of engagement types and corresponding support strategies

a. Governance and Leadership

    Definition: Student governance allows learners to take on leadership roles within the VET institution. This involvement includes roles like member of a student council, class representative, or committee member.

    Learner Support strategies:

    • Offer leadership development programmes and workshops;
    • Provide resources for campaign planning and public speaking;
    • Ensure transparent and fair election processes;
    • Support learner-led initiatives and projects

      b. Learner-led Clubs and Organisations:

      Definition: Learner-led clubs and organisations encompass a wide range of interests, including study-related, cultural, recreational, and service-oriented. Learners join these groups to connect with other learners who share similar interests.

      Learner Support Strategies:

      • Facilitate the creation of new clubs and organisations based on learner interests;
      • Provide meeting spaces and resources for club activities;
      • Offer guidance and mentorship for club leaders;
      • Promote club events and meetings to increase participation.

      c. Cultural and Diversity Groups:

      Definition: These groups celebrate and promote cultural diversity and inclusion within the VET institution and learner community.

      Learner Support Strategies:

      • Provide a platform for cultural exchange and understanding;
      • Offer funding for cultural events, festivals, and celebrations;
      • Organise workshops and dialogues on diversity and inclusion;
      • Promote cross-cultural collaboration and awareness.
