Chapter 3 – Effective Conflict Resolution Techniques
In order to successfully resolve conflicts, we have several tools and techniques at our disposal that can help us achieve our desired goals. Here are some of the most efficient (Betetto et al., 2021):
Active listening is a powerful communication technique that involves paying full attention to the speaker, understanding their message, and responding thoughtfully. It’s more than just hearing the words; it’s about engaging with the speaker on a deeper level and showing genuine interest in what they have to say.
Open-ending questions are a valuable tool for sparking conversation, gathering information, and building relationships.
Conflict onion model is a visual representation of the layers of complexity that can underlie a conflict. It suggests that conflicts are often more than just surface-level disagreements, and that there are deeper, underlying issues that need to be addressed in order to resolve the conflict effectively.
All this technique helped us to find out the core of the problem. Once the core of the conflict is identified, individuals can focus, discuss, and reach productive conclusions that promote greater alignment and connection among all parties. It is important to find out your main need, what is essential for you, what you want to achieve in the situation, what you need most at the moment. This way, you will be better prepared for the conversation, find yourself in the situation, be flexible and be a better listener. It is necessary to stop emotionally, to regulate.
The journey through conflict resolution has unveiled the power of communication. By collaboratively identifying these core issues, we pave the way for productive discussions and solutions that strengthen connections and build alignment. The key lies in self-awareness – understanding our own needs, communication styles, and emotional triggers. This allows us to enter conflict situations with a clear focus on achieving mutually beneficial outcomes. Remember, conflict is not inherently negative. It can be a catalyst for growth, innovation, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. By embracing the tools and techniques presented here, we can transform conflict from a wall that divides us into a bridge that leads to a more connected and successful future.
